Out to the homestead

Monday 13th January

The weather report is predicting hot hot hot for the next week here. Today 37 degrees, beautiful blue sky and we take off after coffee in Kingston to the country.

Taking coffee is an institution out here and we have a choice of at least 6 cafes within 5 minutes walk. Today was Italian.

Then we drove to a small place, I mean small, called Jugiong through rolling hills and not much traffic, to have lunch at The Long Track Cafe.

I was very impressed and enjoying my lovely platter of cheese and meat, when a giant cochroach flew in the window and landed on my plate. My hero proceeded to do battle with it, and eventually wrestled it to the ground and out the door, with me going yuk, yuk, yuk, and jumping up and down. Hence to say my plate was quickly removed, a new one found and apologies were liberal. Luckily I had eaten most of my lunch by that time, as my appetite quite suddenly disappeared.

Kate then took us to see the family house and farm at Goondah. Lovely fields of golden grasses. Hard country to farm but it was obvious that she has so many fond memories of growing up there with her four siblings. We then drove through Bowning where she went to primary school.

The Lawrence Estate - Goondah NSW

It is amazing that she grew up in a complete rural setting but has spent her adult life in the city, and is now a complete city person.

We trundled back to Canberra via the country town of Yass. It was settled about 1860 has lots of lovely old buildings and old houses with lovely verandas. This would have been the main town for the Lawrence family when they lived on the farm.

Back home and it is yard arm time again! Oh what a shame.  We sat on the balcony drinking wine and having a great dinner.  What a brilliant time we are having.

  2. Yass always reminds me of a lady in her 90s who, when she met someone from Yass, couldn't resist asking "Do you get many flies down round Yass?" ...... think about it!!

    Don't get it? " ..... down round y' ass?"
