Welcome from the Blast Furnace

Wednesday 16th January

Canberra has decided that we should not forget our last day in the City, by reaching a wopping 40 degrees and we've decided, as Kate put it, to have 'speed tourism' in the air conditioned car.

We started the day with the normal coffee in Kingston before heading off to the Australia State Library, a brilliant building we've been too before, for an exhibition. Needless to say inside with air conditioning.

There was a fabulous exhibition about mapping, which sounds really dry, but was fascinating. It started off with maps from about 900 ad and progressing to the end of the 19 century, with emphasis on Australia of course. What was so fascinating was that the earliest maps hint at a land off the know world, so someone knew something was there, and then the development of when people discovered more about Australia. I was just amazed and so respectful of these people who just took off into the unknown to discover new lands. We had walk around the outside of the Library which has numerous sculptures, but when it hit 40 we jumped back in the car and came home. Later on in the afternoon we drove out to the National Museum, fabulous quirky building, mainly in search of an ice-cream, which we failed, but it was great to see, and will come back again another time. That was enough for the day and we bought ice creams around the corner from the apartment and retired into the air conditioning. Not sure we will be leaving the safety of it again today.

  1. What an amazing building and sculptures. My brother loved Canberra, we never made it there sadly, but you never know we might.

Really good to read what you've been up to. x
