Kaikoura to Havelock

Friday 14th February

We have three days left, so what can we do in three days. We decided to drive part way up to the Abel Tasman national park. We would have much time to explore, but thought we would try to see some of it and get a taster of it.

On our way we saw a sign for the Forrest Wine Estate.  We have had quite a lot of their wine from Adnams in Suffolk, and the van just found its way into the cellar.  It was a great place and Rod had a tasting tray.  We were amazed that Tattybogler, which we drink in the UK was £7 dearer in NZ, poor people. A lovely spot and we did come away with a few bottles.

Lovely scenery along the way.

Our final stop was Havelock, set on a river estuary and famous for its Green Lipped Mussels.  We were in a lovely little camp with friendly people.  You would walk around the town and the harbour in 5 minutes... not a lot to do.

We were sad to discover that we could have had a day sailing on the Mail boat leaving from Havelock and sailing through the Sound delivering the mail, but it went that morning.... typical, would be going again for 4 days... our timing at times is right off.

As it was Valentines night, we went out for dinner at the Slip Inn, a little restaurant down in the harbour, it's mussels were recommended. I had the biggest plate of the biggest mussels I have ever seen, and again have had enough protein to last me the whole week. Unfortunately the night was spoiled by the service, or complete lack of it in the restaurant.... it was a complete joke. But we ate up and , leaving other eaters angry. Shame really.

  1. I see you've taken pics of some grapes that will one day be the wine you buy in Fleet!!
Green-Lipped mussels always remind me of tennis elbow - the tablets are great relieving pain for that complaint. Just thought you'd like to know that!!
