Pahiatua to Napier

Friday 21st February

Up to Napier today, and to an Arts Deco weekend.

I was last here 16 years ago, and then Napier was closed, I mean closed.  I stayed at The Criterion Backpackers which was in an Art Deco theatre.  It was fabulous and I am hoping it is still there.  The only problem was that the whole place was closed.  I remember going out at 7pm looking for food and couldn't find anything open, this was the centre of the town, at last we found a take away pizza, the only place open.

I do hope it is more lively this time!

Napier was  devastated by an earthquake in 1931which completely flattened it, and then burnt it out by a fire. A complete Art Deco town was built to replace it and is one of the most complete art deco places in the world.  Wonderful.

It only  took a couple of hours to drive up to Napier, through Hastings and arrived at the camp site at 12.30. So plenty of time to get ourselves sorted and walk into town.  As we drove into the campsite there were stacks of vintage cars everywhere, gorgeous.

We walked into town and the party had started, vintage cars milling around, aircraft doing displays above us, people dressed up in 1920's clothing, great fun.

At about 7 we caught the bus back into town, a bit too long a walk to go in and out, and in and out.
Wandered around the busy streets and ended up in a small bar that had an American guy playing the honky tonk piano, he was brilliant and we ended up staying until midnight, another long haul back  to the camp but it was worth it.

What a brilliant day, can;t wait for tomorrow.
