Friday
We woke up to the fog that had been off shore last night. It was really spooky to look out into the harbour and see nothing, then a ghostly ferry appears 30ft away coming into the dock, something out of King Kong.
We packed up our van and left our car park in the city for the green fields and valleys
It didn't take long on we headed inland for the fog to disappear and the skies to clear. In fact the Lower Hutt was very pretty.
We are on our way to Napier for the weekend and didn't want to arrive until Friday, so decided to drive for a couple of hours and then have a relaxing afternoon, somewhere quiet, after Wellington.
We stopped for coffee at Grey town, which didn't sound promising but turned out to be a lovely place and carried on to Pahaitua. Nothing really to say at the place, small town centre, and a very quiet camp site, in fact, us two, a German guy and a few people who seemed to live there. Really quiet, we loved it.
So a little chat about NZ. We've met a lot of retired NZ people who pack up and sell their homes, buy a caravan and either find a nice spot somewhere and stay there, or travel around a bit. Seems to be the thing to do over here. Not sure I could cope with it, but met quiet a few at Havelock and chatted to them. I suppose if you have no ties any more, it releases some capital and you can go fishing alot, they really enjoyed the lifestyle.
Anyway, on some of the more remote sites, we have met younger people who seems to live on the camp sites. I think there is a lot of, not poverty, but people on low incomes. We met a some at this site, who seem to be itinerant workers, I wouldn't say they were Maori, but certainly indigenous people. They were here doing sheep shearing. A hard life, I think.
