Sunday 2nd
February - Queenstown
We are off to
Queenstown today, and started the journey with a stop at Lake Hawea,
a long and huge lake, which reminded me of the Lake District.
Then on to Wanaka for
lunch. Wanaka is famed for it's 'Wings of Wanaka' a huge air show held
every March. The town is set on another lovely lake, and it is
obviously a place to go for Sunday, the place was heaving
with people having lunch, walking, swimming, sunbathing, it seemed
fun place. We stayed for a couple of hours and had a long walk
along the front.
We turned right at
Wanaka and stopped off at Arrowtown, and Old Gold Mining town near
Queenstown for a wander. A bit like Disney world, but worth a stop.
I didn't quite know
what to expect from Queenstown. It is the centre of everything on
the adventure side, bunjy jumping, jetover, canyon swinging, kayaking
etc etc, and I had thought it might be backpackers paradise, what we
found was a smart, lively town by a beautiful lake.
We booked into the only
camp in town, and was charged an exhorbitant amount to stay in a
large car park. Not impressed.
In the afternoon, we
walked around the town and sat on the jetty and had a glass of wine
and people watched. We spoke with a local guy, as I was interested
to find out how people lived here, as it seemed in many ways to be in
the middle of nowhere. As expected virtually all of the people earn
money from tourism of some kind. But it does have a double wammy in
that it is summer destination, and in the winter turns into a ski
resor
We dressed up in our
best togs that night and returned to the jetty and ate a fish
platter, I was completely stuffed and have had my protein intake for
the next week. Jam butties from now on.
