February – Makarora
Today was driving day,
pottering down Route 6, descending down from the Southern Alps towards
the Lake District. After the spectacular scenery of Franz Josef and
the Fox Glaciers, I was waiting to be disappointed. Instead we hit
the coast road, which was barren and empty landscape and then the
rainforest and rivers and theGates of Haast and down the Haast Pass. What can I say, brilliant.
We had to stop a
Makarora for the night, as there had been a major road slide months ago and they
were still doing works to clear it. The road each evening was closed
at Makarora for 30kms from 6pm to 6am. We camped at the lodge and
really nice spot in the hills and had a quiet evening.
The Garlic Crisis: as
we descended from the mountains, our fridge decided to open and spray
is contents all over the van. The problem was the lid of the garlic
paste came off and decided to splatter itself over the inside. I have
tried to clean it all up, but there is till the lovely pungent aroma
of garlic everywhere. Great if we encounter any vampires, butI am
hoping that sand flies dislike it as well, as they have taken quite a
like to both of us. Horrible things. We've bought some more
chemicals.
Until you mentioned the sand flies Janette, I thought you may have wandered into Paradise. Every day you are seeing the most stunning sights ..... are you both wearing chin protectors? Sounds like you need them with all those jaw-dropping scenes.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoying reading about all your adventures and especially your pics!!!! I have developed a slightly green tinge in my eyes :)
You and me both Sherryl, the flies are probably there to remind J & R that there IS too much of a good thing!
